Baja Scuba Diving Report - February 20th 2009

Dive report February 2009.

Hammerheads, whale sharks, sea lions and more.

Hola Divers.
Water temperature is a bit on the cold side but it is still some of the best diving around.
Water temp is around 68 degrees at the surface and a bit colder at depth so a 7mm wet suit is required. Air temp is in the high 80’s during the day and drops to mid to low 70’s at night so bring some warm clothing.

Hammerheads at El Bajo,
The Marisla Sea Mounts are always a great dive with lots of life around the mount and different pelagic coming in and feeding on bait looking for protection of the mount.
Some interesting rock formation that is home to numerous green morays, some time you can see up to 10 morays in one small cave. But the main attraction are the schooling hammerheads that come to the mount.
In a single dive you can see all of this and more some times.

Los Islotes.
Home to some 350 California sea lion this site is one of the more popular at the moment because of the attitude of the sea lion pups.
They are about 7 months old at the moment and are extremely playful, they like to play with divers coming in to nibble on fins and some times on your regs.
Besides sea lions this site attracts numerous sea life, at the moment you can see big schools of sardines that sometime entirely block out light.

Whale sharks are still around, why? We don't know but they are here.
On the way back from the dives the boat will take a 5 minute detour and go look for the whale sharks, once we find the you better put on your snorkeling gear fast, jump in the water and snorkel with this gentle giants.
